Becoming

I raised a single organic form from the lower canvas, built from sweeping strokes of silver, green, and muted pink against a near-black ground. I kept the gesture vertical and flame-like but restrained, not explosive, just persistent. The brushwork carries the same gestural vocabulary as Gathering Light but turned inward, more subdued. The dark field gives the rising form nowhere to hide, making every stroke deliberate and exposed. I painted this piece over an earlier canvas. In one section between the leaves, the work beneath shows through faintly. That ghost is part of what the title names: every becoming is built on something it used to be. The painting carries what came before, and the forms rising through it are stronger for what they cover, not in spite of it.
